Police Responsible for Dagrin's Death, Kills Another Bus Passenger Over Bribe.

The family of a man shot dead last Tuesday by policemen from Alakara police station in Lagos has claimed the body of the deceased and buried him yesterday in Ibadan, SaharaReporters has learned.

The victim, identified as 23-year old Lawal Toheeb, was shot and killed at 9: 30 p.m. on the night of July 22 at Alakara junction in Mushin, Lagos State. Several eyewitnesses said the police, who were at their usual pastime of demanding bribes from bus drivers, had shot at a bus whose driver resisted their demand.

The gunshot killed Mr. Toheeb, a passenger in the bus, but the driver and other passengers scampered for safety.  The policemen had immediately cleaned blood stains from the scene of their murder and removed the body of the victim. Eyewitnesses, who suspected that the police would try to cover their murderous crime, reported the atrocity to SaharaReporters.

A witness, who owns a business stall in the area, also claimed that the police caused the automobile accident in 2010 that claimed the life of a budding rap artiste, Olaitan Olanipekun, aka Da Grin. He said the police had stopped a truck loaded with cement in the middle of the road in order to harass the driver for a bribe.

“The cement truck had no rear lights on, so the musician who was driving an oncoming car did not know there was any vehicle ahead and rammed into it without holding the brake,” said the source.

He added that the policemen asked the truck driver to pull up and out of the road, and then they moved Da Grin's car too to give the appearance that the musician’s car hit a truck parked by the roadside.

A relative of Mr. Toheeb told SaharaReporters that the police admitted to his killing and took responsibility for his burial. The source added that the police told Mr. Toheeb’s family that the officer who fired the fatal bullet had been detained for punishment. The name of the killer cop was, however, not disclosed.

Culled from SaharaReporters.
